It is difficult to describe the spatial richness of Tokyo, a crowded and disorderly city. Fujimoto’s design blurs the line between house and city, filling the building with this richness and creating a miniature Tokyo.
As well as a home for himself, the client commissioned three rental flats, made up of house-shaped elements each on one or two stories, connected by external and internal staircases. Ascending the building the whole city and can be experienced. As the architect puts it, living here is like living “both at the foot of the hill and at its peak”. The steep exterior staircases which lead up to the top floor are the vertical equivalent of Tokyo’s narrow alleyways.
