The basic idea for Sweden’s Treehotel came from a novel, in which the main characters escape from the city to build themselves tree houses. The young Swedish architects commissioned to design it were given more or less a free hand, the client only stipulating that the structures should blend in with their natural surroundings, highlight the relationship between man and trees, be made of natural materials where possible and minimize technology while maintaining the standards you’d expect in a hotel. The variety of tree house designs which resulted speak for themselves!
The 2-4 person, 15-30 m² houses, made primarily of wood attached to trees are 4-6 metres off the ground and can be reached by various means: ramps, rope bridges and stairs. By spring 2012 five of the planned 24 houses had been completed.
