“Now that’s what I call an effing hall. It was indescribably cool” – so say visitors to the place, and they are no doubt right, although its architects have not come up with anything new. Just like in other halls of residence, on the ground there is a café, common rooms, lecture theatres, bathrooms, bicycle sheds, workshops and study areas. On the six upper storeys vast numbers of single and double study-bedrooms (a total of 360) are arrayed in a circle, as the southern Chinese Hakka people have been arranging their dwellings for hundreds of years. Every room has its own bathroom and 12 residents share a kitchen, sitting room, store room and balcony. The bedrooms are quieter, as they face the street, while the communal rooms look down on the courtyard, which is always buzzing with activity.
The good news is that this large capacity hall of residence also accommodates exchange students.
