Norway has one of the lowest rates of recidivism (when criminals re-offend after being convicted) in the world (20%, while the rate in the USA is close to 60%) and convicts spend their prison terms in really humane conditions. There are no bars at the windows and the prison guards, many of whom are women, do not carry guns. It is not the objective of the prison service in Norway to intimidate. The prisoners have their own cells, which are light, well-equipped (with a desk, television and fridge), and 10-12 inmates share a kitchen and a common room. They have access to a recording studio and a gym, and can attend cookery classes or music lessons.

If that were not enough the prisoners can complete questionnaires to indicate how the conditions in the prison can be improved.
