Amtrak (the USA’s state passenger train company) uses double-decker, 4.9 m high and 25.9 m wide Superliner carriages on many of its long distance lines. The trains have a top speed of 180 km/h but even travelling that fast the journey times on the longest routes can be 48 hours.
Various types of carriage run on the services: dining cars have a restaurant upstairs and a kitchen below while sleeping cars have several kinds of convertible sleeping compartments on both levels. Lounge cars are equipped various types of seats upstairs and baggage storage below.
